An Open Letter to Fox Sports

What word springs to mind when I think of your postseason coverage? Hmmm... disgraceful is succinct enough, I think. I'll start simple. Firstly, your producers and directors need to learn how to time commercials, and not cut back to the game when the pitch is halfway to the plate. Oh, since it just happened while I'm typing this, how about watching that fan instead of the flight of that foul ball in the ninth. Oh that was good. Compelling stuff. Cutting to 5 reaction shots of fans between pitches is NOT interesting. Way to perpetuate the low attention span of the American public.

Where's Al Leiter? He's been the ONLY bright spot of your postseason coverage. Thom Brennaman's a little bland, but at least he's not insipid like Buck, and McCarver makes my ears bleed. Which I don't get because I *did* enjoy his book. And Chris Myers.... he's had some ridiculous interviews, but good Lord... that Leon... *thing* - I don't care WHAT kind of marketing deals you cook up, at least have SOME semblance of integrity. I'll not be drinking Bud anytime soon, or watching Fox after the Series is over.

Enough with the flash-whiz-bang-pop presentation. I'm sure it IS possible to present the greatest game in the world in a dignified fashion while still making it engaging. But I guess that would take some imagination on your part, and hiring someone like that would cost more than the geekanerd you've got doing up the computer graphics. What's wrong with showing the interaction between the pitcher and catcher - signs, shaking off the signs, etc., and EXPLAINING what might be going on (like Leiter did) instead of just blathering on and showing a fan biting their nails for the 80th time. Kids (the ones that manage to stay awake) aren't going to fall in love with and follow the game because of sound effects and Scooter (jeez, PLEASE end him - or give him something useful to say besides "a fastball goes fast"). The reason people follow a sport is because they feel a *connection* and *an understanding* for what's going on. I have seen *nothing* in your productions that even comes close to engendering that in viewers.

I'm too frustrated to continue at this point. I really hope you read these, and please, even if there aren't others writing, I am not the only one who feels this way.
